Jan Wojciech Piekarski

Head of the Council, Ambassador to Pakistan (1984 - 1989), Belgium & Luxembourg (1998 - 2002) & Israel (2003 - 2006)

 

Ambassador ad personam. Graduate of University of Warsaw Law School (1963) and postgraduate studies in foreign service at the Polish Institute of International Affairs (1984). In his long diplomatic career held many positions (Vice Director, Department Director, General Director) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, dealing with relations with Africa, the Middle East and Asia. From 1994 – 1997 was Head of the Diplomatic Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, organized official and unofficial visits for Presidents Lech Walesa and Alexander Kwasniewski. Many positions abroad including First Secretary of the Embassy in Iran (1977-1981), Ambassador to Pakistan, Head of United States Interests Section (USIS) in Iraq (1991-1994), Ambassador to Kingdom of Belgium and Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (1997-2002), and also to Isreal (2003-2006).

Lecturing on the diplomatic and consular law, diplomatic protocol Middle East relations i.a. at National School of Public Administration; Diplomatic Academy of Polish Institute of International Relations, University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań, European Academy of Diplomacy, International Relations Studies of Warsaw School of Economics.

Many awards including: Gold Cross of Merit (1973), Gold Badge of ZSP (Polish Students’ Association) (1973), Silver Badge of J.Krasicki (1973), Bronze Medal of the Minister of Defence (1973), Medal of 40 Years of PRP, Chevalier of Polonia Resitutae (1997) and several abroad including Gold Medal of the United States Secretary of State´s Distinguished Service Award (1994), Commander of the French Legion of Honour (1996), Grand Cross with Star of the Order of the Kingdom of Norway (1996), Grand Cross with Star of the Order of the Italian Republic (1997), Cross with Star of the Order of Feniks of the Republic of Greece (1997), Grand Cross of the Chevalier of the Portuguese Republic (1997), Chevalier of the Ukrainian Order of Jaroslaw the Wise (1997), Chevalier of the Lithuanian Order of Grand Duc Gedymin (1997), Grand Cross with Star of the Order of Leopold II Belgium Grand Cross of the Order of the Crown (Belgium) (2001), Order of the Rising Sun of the Emperor of Japan (2002).

Chairman of the Council of Ambassadors of the European Academy of Diplomacy. Member of the Reflection Group by the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
