Special Guest – Dr. Małgorzata Smieszek at the Academy of Young Diplomats 2021/2022

The European Academy of Diplomacy (EAD) is thrilled to announce Dr. Małgorzata Smieszek as a Special Guest for the VI Session of the 2021/2022 edition of the Academy of Young Diplomats (AYD). During this session, Dr. Smieszek will deliver a Global Talk titled “Science Diplomacy at the Top of the World – Lessons from the Arctic”

Dr. Smieszek is currently a Researcher and Project Coordinator at the UiT Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø, a position she has held since 2020. Dr. Smieszek’s research area focuses on international environmental and Arctic governance, science-policy interface, science diplomacy, Arctic scientific cooperation, and gender-environment nexus. In April 2021, Dr. Smieszek was appointed Adjunct Fellow of the East-West Center (EWC) in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dr. Smieszek also works as a Research Fellow and Co-Chair of the Polar Oceans cluster of the Earth System Governance Project Task Force on Ocean Governance. Before joining the University of Norway, Dr. Smieszek worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Lapland in Finland, collaborating with the Arctic Centre from 2013 to 2020. 

Dr. Smieszek is a leader in her field with extensive experience in national and international Arctic projects for the European Commission, Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Finland’s Prime Minister Office, German Arctic Office, Iceland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and Finland’s and Iceland’s Chairmanships of the Arctic Council (AC). 

Between 2017-2018, Dr. Smieszek was the chair of the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) action group on communicating Arctic science to policy-makers, and a representative of IASC at the meetings of the Arctic Council. She is a member of the steering committee of the North Pacific Arctic Conference (NPAC) of the East-West Center (EWC) and the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI).

Dr. Smieszek’s insights in Science Diplomacy and its role in the Arctic are an invaluable contribution to the VI Session of the 2021/2022 edition of the Academy of Young Diplomats.
